Sotware Update for Windows Defender?

This evening Windows Defender is stating "A new Software Update Available " A
New Version of Windows Defender is available for download" when I click on
the download button it leads me to the Windows Defender website but I do not
see a WD update. It still is Window Defender (Beta 2) from 4-12-06. Anyone
else getting this? If so, what has any one done to correct this? Thanks. Vince

Interesting--on the box that sees this announcement, if you go to Help,
About in Windows Defender, what is the top Version number?

Excellent--the download referenced would bring that to 1.1.1347.0, I
believe.

So--this is not a new version, in terms of what is available for download,
but it is a new notification mechanism--and the download (just download and
run--it will upgrade what is in place)--will bring your code current--there
are changes--although they won't jump out at you--look through tools,
options after the update.

Hi Bill Sanderson. Vince here. IT WORKED. The download changed the Windows
Defender Version to 1.1.1347.0. I now longer receive the mesage that a new
software is available. Upon reboot, Windows Defender no longer appears in the
system tray letting me know there is a software update available. As you have
helped me before, I would be lost and frustrated with WD if you weren't on
these message boards helping me. Thanks Bill

I get the same nonsensical notification...my system reads as follows:

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1051.0

Engine Version: 1.1.1481.0

Signature Version: 1.14.1525.2

Will try the new version from the Website now...

I did the 'update' [which would initially not load until I shut down WD
completely] and came up with this new set of numbers...sure seems like a
long walk on a shoret pier, but that's probably just me...

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1347.0

Engine Version: 1.1.1481.0

Definition Version: 1.14.1525.2

Terrific--glad they have that mechanism in place and working.

The one question I want to know when I see such a dialog is "does this
message give you the right assurance (warm fuzzy)--that this is a REAL
update, and you are getting it from Microsoft. and not some kind of scam?

I've now seen this dialog on one machine, and it is pretty good, but I was
dismayed that the update button took me to the product home page, and I had
to find the link to get to the download page for the new version.

Yes I agree, I thought it was a glich at first and left it a couple of days
until i found this forum.. surely MS could come up with a better way than
confusing the end user into thinking they are downloading some build again?!?

I, too, had the same experience with this software upgrade. I think that it
would have been more apparent what was going on if:

a. When you click on the Download button, you aren't taken to the Defender
web site's home page, but rather to a software upgrade page that clearly
states the current version being downloaded.

b. The Status details on the bottom of the Defender home page which show
the Signature version should also show the software and engine version
numbers similar to McAfee VirusScan. While it could be argued that you need
to go to Help About for McAfee, Defender should either display all version
numbers in the 'home' page Status details, or force the user to go to Help
About for all version info (naturally, I would prefer the former over the
latter).

With both A and B above, one could do a quick check of your current running
versions against the allegedly new version the New Version Download button
takes you to.

Thanks to those of you who posted to the forum for solving this little
mystery.
