songs skip

I just transfered my songs from my old XP machine to my new Vista machine.
When playing the songs from my library, every song skips near the end of the
song. This is all legal music that I copied from my CDs. Any suggestions?
I have tried closing all other programs when playing, no difference. I am
using the windows media player and have checked for updates. The songs are
in .wma format.

I would be interested to know if you
RIP the CDs with WMP in Vista...
if you still have the same problem?

I had the same problem. I did away with my "skins" and the problem went
away. Clear sound now.

I haven't tried using any skins yet, but will keep that in mind when I rip
them again.
Thanks

No, I ripped them on my XP machine. Come to find out, the ones I ripped to
MP3 have the same problem. I used Intellimover to transfer my stuff, and on
the whole. it worked good. I have been told though, that moving them high
speed can corrupt the MP3s and WMVs - which can cause the "skip".
So it looks like I rip them again (which should work) or I have backup
copies on my external backup drive that I may use to copy them again.

Thanks for your reply.

Hi,
Sorry I am not going to be of much help, but I have exactly the same
problem. I have recently purchased a new Dell supported by Vista. Any CD I
rip to my Window Media Player have a kind of defect, at about 10-15 seconds
before the end of each song, it skips for 2-3 seconds, I have tried
everything I could think of, including delete and rip again with highest
quality, but no luck.
If you managed to solve this problem, could you let me know how ? Equally if
I do find a solution, I will let you know.

After reading your reply, I tried ripping a cd, using the default wma@128. I
am listening to it now and the songs seems ok, no skipping. I will try it
later making MP3s, which is what I prefer. I will let you know how it goes.
BTW, I am using a new DELL also.

What I did find out is after ripping a CD, if you add it to your playlist,
and play it, it will "skip". If you go to your Music folder, double click on
the same song, it will play just fine.

Hey Microsoft, explain this..At least add it to your list of things to fix.

Mike (above) said that he removed his skins and they played fine. I am not
using skins or visulizations, or any addons yet.

Have you checked for updated drivers from Dell? I thought this was a known
problem with the Sigmatel(?) sound card drivers that they're shipping... ?

THANKS. I went to your site and "removed All Enhancements", as you
suggested. The songs are playing fine now.

So that should indicate that you had a bad third party audio processing
object...

What sound card / driver do you have? It'd be interesting to know which
vendors are having problems here. =\

Zach:

I'm having the same problem with a new Dell XPS 410--a second or two of
skipping, at about 15-to-20 seconds before the end of each track. I have the
onboard SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC, also, and have the latest codec
installed.

I used the Windows Vista Community: Discussion Groups web interface to
search all 'Windows Vista discussion groups' for "wmp skip". I found quite a
few matches. It seems like many people are experiencing this problem. There
are numerous threads on Dell's Vista support forums, also.

I only see this problem when using a playlist; i.e., it doesn't occur when
playing just one track. Perhaps it is a side-effect of WMP queuing up the
next track?

By selecting "Disable all enhancements" on the Sound > Playback > Speakers /
Headphones (SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC) > Properties > Enhancements
tab, the skipping disappears--as do the enhancements--"Speaker Fill", "Room
Correction", and "Loudness Equalization", in my case.

My guess is that this is a problem with the codec or with how WMP11's
queuing interacts with the codec. What's the best way to get this
resolved--especially since Dell doesn't seem to have a clue?

To whom it may concern,

It's easy to fix this problem. click on control panel, click on sound, click on playback, hightlight icons and text, click on properties, click on enhancements, check mark box with the text next to it which reads: Disable all sound effects, click on Apply, click on OK. This procedure will fix your problem. Enjoy!
