confirmation when they are read?

Just add the phrase "please email me if you get this message" -- That's
the most reliably way. Few users honour delivery confirmations, nor do
many users load images automatically, so it's generally not possible to
determine whether or not a user has opened a message.

I just gave you the answer. Yes there are ways to guess at whether or
not a recipient has opened the message, but they're all dependant on the
recipient choosing to give you that knowledge.

If the recipient is willing to tell you, you may as well just ask up
front, no?
