Some Files/folders Within Shared Folder not seen over Nework

E

Ed

Setup: Desktop and Laptop both running XP Home SP2 with all M$
updates.

Wireless Network: Desktop Hardwired to a Linksys WRT54G v2.2 Router
running v4.20.7 firmware (Latest). Laptop running wireless adapter
WPC54G v2 with firmware v 1.2.0.30 (Latest) and driver v 6.0.0.18
(Latest). Running 128bit WEP security.

Each computer has a single shared folder on each where stuff is copied
to in order to transfer, via the network, from one computer to the
other.

Problem: Can’t see all files and folders in the laptop’s shared folder
when looking at it from the desktop’s network places. However, can see
all files and folders in the desktop’s shared folder when looking at
it from the laptop’s network places.

Okay, did a chkdsk /f of both systems… No Problems reported.

I then copied a folder containing multiple folders and files into the
laptop’s share folder. I then looked at that from the desktop and
there were folders and files missing. I rebooted both systems and
looked at the laptop through the desktop and the same folders and
files were missing. I then looked at the laptop’s share folder through
the laptop’s network places and all the folders and files that were in
the share folder showed.

I then reversed the whole process and copied a large folder containing
folders and files into the desktop’s share folder and looked at it
from the laptop and everything was there. So the problem so far is
when looking from the desktop to the laptop.

I then went back to looking from the desktop to the laptop and renamed
one of the files that were not showing up and things got really
strange. The renamed file showed up but one of the folders disappeared
at the same time. I deleted everything in the laptop’s share folder
and copied the same big folder containing folders and files back and
the same files and folders were missing and the same thing happened to
the same files and folders when I renamed that same file again. WOW!

I then changed the attributes of that folder that I had been copying
into the laptop’s share folder to a share folder itself and looked at
that folder directly from the desktop. Folders and files missing but
not the same ones that had been missing when that folder had been
copied into the laptop’s share folder.

I then remembered that I had Zone Alarm pro running on each system and
shut it down on both systems and went through the whole mess again…
Same results…. I then shut off the router’s firewall… Same results….

So what we have so far is:

1. The desktop can’t see all files and folders in the laptop’s share
folder or any folder set to share for that matter….. Knocks out a bad
place on the HD probability….

2. File name length doesn’t matter as some files and folders not being
seen have names as short as 3 letters and others have files names as
long as 18 letters.

3. If you change the file name of a file that isn’t showing, then it
will all of a sudden appear but something else will then disappear
that was showing before.

4. No utilities or applications are blocking because I turned
everything off that I could think of (Firewalls, Virus protection,
ad/spyware protection).

5. All files and folders that are not showing up do not have any
attributes set such as read-only, system, or hidden.

Ed

I have the same problem but I have three computers networked and none
of the machines can see *everything* shared on the others but they all
can see *some* of the shared files and folders. I assume that whatever
Ed's problem turns out to be, it's on all three machines. I experience
the same results when changing names, etc.

I've got all software firewalls turned off everywhere and so on...

I've added every user/group/security principal available to both the
sharing permissions and the ACL and given them all full-control. All
folders and subfolders inherit all security settings and ownership from
the root so they're all the same.

I made sure that all the machines have the same login ID and password,
too. A look at fsmgmt.msc tells me that the remote machine's session
is authenticated under the corresponding account on the sharing machine
(it says "No" in the "Guest" column). No luck.

At this point, unless someone sees a reason to believe my problem is
significantly different from Ed's, I'll watch the correspondence (if
there is any) and see if solving Ed's problem ends up solving my own.
Thanks.

Scott,

Even though there doesn't appear to be a lot of response to Ed's original
problem, it would still be in your best interest if you were to start your own
thread asking for help. Ed's post is kind of old, and it's possible that he got
help elsewhere.

I was thinking the same thing... *BUT*, I found the solution!

In a post to w.p.windowsxp.network_web, it was suggested that update
KB885250 was the problem... I uninstalled it and... Bob's yer uncle.
(I actually just copied the previous version of mrxsmb.sys into the
proper directories.)

Thanks for looking out for me.

Gack. 885250. How long will THAT one hit here?
