file sharing, some share and some don't

I have setup a home network, a local desktop wired to a router and a laptop
wireless to the router, router is connected to a cable modem. Both run XP
Pro, latest updates. Both are set up for "simple file sharing". Both have
anti-virus & firewall software running (supplied by ISP), Windows Firewall is
OFF.

I can see the desktop and all the folders from the laptop and can share the
printer connected to the desktop. I can also see the laptop from the desktop
and can access filed on the laptop.

I can only access "some" files on the desktop from the laptop... For
example, I have multiple folders in My Pictures (located in My Documents), I
can correctly view the pictures in some folders but not in other folders.

I can open some files on the desktop from the laptop and others won't open
(access denied... message).

I have gone through many of the suggestions here but so far have no answer..

Any ideas??? Thanks.

Charlie,

With Simple File Sharing, simplicity comes at a price. All files will never be
accessible thru the network. You have to be specific about what files and
folders you want to share.

With all of that said, you can change permissions. And sometimes there will be
problems, and you'll have to change permissions.

Chuck,

Thanks for the promp reply and good advise.

I noticed, by accident, that if I copied a file that I could not open due to
access denied permissions, that I could now open the newly copied file.

So I just copied "My Documents" to a temporary folder and then copied
everything back into "My Documents", now I have access to all files. Kinda'
brute force, but it worked. I am speculating that copying or creating new
files sets correct sharing permissions...

Thanks,
Charlie

Charlie,

Yes, that's a detail which you have to watch for. Copying, and moving, files in
NTFS give different results.
