Asking for username/password on open folder

The Windows username/password window opens when trying to access a shared
folder on my desktop. Laptop is wireless. Have added an external hard drive
and want to share a folder on it. Have enabled file sharing. The folder
appears in Network places. (xp Pro) This is the only folder that asks for
the username/password. The others open right up.
Any Ideas????

My new hard drive is connected via USB port. This may be part of the problem
with the sharing.

check (a) the share access rights and (b) the folder and file
access rights.

Thanks so much for responding. Still researching what is going on. Not
sure what you mean, i.e. (a)...., (b)..... Here's my setup:

Turned off SFS
The Shared Folder is on the Western Digital External HD with USB connection.
Right-clicked on the desired share folder, selected "Share this folder". On
Permissions, set "Everyone" for read and change rights.
CLicked OK.

This really seems weird because this is the only folder that is requiring
the login id/password.

With Simple File Sharing (SFS) turned off, in addition to clicking on
the Sharing Tab -> "Share this Folder" and clicking the Permissions
button (and setting to Everyone), you also have to go to Folder
Properties and the "Security" tab and make sure that the security for
the folder is set up such that "Everybody" has the appropriate access
to the folder as well.

With SFS turned on, you must make sure that the "Guest" user has the
appropriate access.

Ok, I've added "Everyone" onto the Security Tab list of users and gave
read/write permissions for the shared folder, but still asking for
un/password. Other users listed have necessary permissions.
Should I try and set up a new user on each machine specifically for this?

Well, found what would work, after about 3 days of research. Simply mapped
the shared folder to a network drive. (had to uninstall Acronis to get rid of
the "not enough storage area...." error). Now I can access it without it
asking for a password.
