Password problem for network access

Question
I have a desktop pc running windows xp home with sp2 connected to a router
(wired)and a laptop running xp home with sp2, connected to the router
wirelessly. The desktop can see the laptop in my workgroup computers window
and can also see the shared folders on the laptop in my network places, and
can edit copy move, etc the files there in. But the laptop can only see the
desktop computer in my workgroup computers window. The shared folders do not
appear in my network places on the laptop. If you go to
start>run>\\neil>enter(neil being the desktop name), a window appears asking
for a password for a username of "\\neil\guest" this field is greyed out. I
have not set any passwords. I have checked and file and print sharing is
turned on and all shared files are shared with network access. Both computers
can access the internet via the router. The local guest account is off. The
network guest account is on(active). Can anyone tell me what I have missed?

How can I get rid of all the network settings, etc so I can start over a
fresh?

You say that the guest account is on (active), so I assume that you've
run this command on the desktop:

net user guest /active:yes

Remove any network password from the Guest account on the desktop:

1. Click Start | Run.
2. Type "control userpasswords2" in the box and click OK:
3. Click Guest.
4. Click Reset Password.
5. Click OK without entering a new password.
