SOLUTION : Keeps installing same signature update

S

Skynet

Found this solution documented on a forum somewhere for
when the manual update keeps looping and updating to the
same signature version over and over.

Obviously *** USE AT YOUR OWN RISK *** , I don't know if
this is the 'right' thing to do, it seems to have worked
fine for me though :-

Do a manual update 'File > Check for Updates'.
This will drop 3 .gcz files into your temp internet cache
folder.
These 3 files are actually compressed so open them with
something like winzip and extract the .gcd file from each.
Shutdown MSAntiSpyware.
Copy the 3 .gcd files you just extracted into
the 'Program Files > Microsoft AntiSpyware' folder
(overwriting the ones that are currently there).
Restart MSAntiSpyware.
Doing a manual update should now report that you have the
latest version and not keep installing the same update
over and over.

We will have to wait and see what happens when the next
definition file is released, it might just start looping
again!.

Plun,

After you sent me the email about being able to download
the older set using http://, I was also able to as well.

However, the same thing happened to me this time as well,
only this time the I had to specify the last URL as
https:// instead of http://. I tried this at about 2 PM
in Ohio.

I think this is what's causing almost everyone to not be
able to update their copy of MSAS, unless they update
manually.

I think the update server uses the denominator in the
DefinitionIncrementVersion (DIV), found in Help > About
Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware... > Diagnostics, to
determine what definition version you have installed.
Since only one of the two files, the last two files in
your list, that make up the defintion are now being
downloaded, then the DIV is being updated to state
something like 84/82, where 84 is 5731's value and 82 is
5729's value. The server thinks you only have 5729,
which is true, given only one file has been downloaded.
I think the other file is for updating the DIV value.
Since only one definition file has been downloaded, it's
causing the system to not properly install the new
definitions.

Could Microsoft please look at the URL's that are being
used by MSAS and make certain that this doesn't happen
again?
