Software on Ebay is Legit??

Hey what's the deal with the software I'm seeing on Ebay. There are tons of
MS products being offered, but they all say that the proof of purchase has
been carefully removed.

Are these products actually pirated versions?

What the heck do the sellers do with all these proof of purchases? And how
can they afford to sell the software for half of what it costs to get it
from MS?

There's got to be some funny business going on, right?

Often there may be some pirating happening, but about
a year ago that auction service tried to tighten up so that
sellers had a harder time doing that.
Sometimes if you compare to list price, people can buy
things on sale, and they then use rebates that require the
proof of purchase. After that their cost may be quite low.
Whether it is legal for them to do this or not, I do now know.

I don't know if I got lucky or what, but I purchased an authentic MS Office
2000 Small Business Suite a couple of years ago. It was brand new and
unopened with the COA. While I don't doubt there is piracy going on, you can
find legitimate software on EBay. Just research the sellers before you buy.

Greetings --

Hate to break it to you, but Office Small Business Edition is
legitimately available _only_ as an OEM installation on a new PC. If
you didn't get a PC along with your copy of Office Small Business
Edition, you didn't really get a technically legitimate license.

Some is legitimate, a lot of it isn't. When piracy does occur,
eBay usually just fobs off complaints, saying that they have no
control over the sellers.

Well, I got the student/teacher edition. I haven't installed it yet because
I am in the middle of writing up an important research paper and don't want
to risk goofing up the computer right now.

It sure does look ok. I mean, it came in a regular box that was inside one
of those plastic coverings, and there's the product key and the disk has all
those funny rainbow colors on it.

I'll tell you what though. After looking on Ebay and asking sellers a few
questions, I got one email offering to sell "backups" of all kinds of
programs for like $10 a piece. But you were only supposed to buy those if
ou already owned the original software. Yeah - sure.

Pirating is really ubiquitous, huh? I live in Asia and man it's everywhere
here.

If you have to ask....don't buy it.
