soft or hardware problem?

Hello,

I have the small model of the Pavilion s7620, for few reasons I
reformatted and reinstall the windows xp with the SP3 (a normal one,
not the oem HP).
Since then, I'm having a very big problem: The computer shutdown
suddenly after maximum 20 min and not restart automaicaly afterwards.

1) I try with 2 different HDs
2) I try with xp SP2
3) I download the latest drivers from nvidia (for the chipset and
graphic) and with the drivers from the old installation
4) the fan in the CPU is working fine and the dissipator is not
extremally hot
5) every thing works fine
6) with the drivers of nvidia, MCP51 LPC Bridge is not installed, but
the all computer works fine and quick (but with the old drivers - from
HP - was installed)

What can be the problem?

Thanks,

NiTo

nitoglycerine,

First, check Power Options settings in the Control Panel. If the settings
there are not causing your problem check the Power Settings in your BIOS.

Bios (updated) and windows default settings

Only to be clear, the shutdown is unexpected, the computer is turned
off in one sec.

What were the reasons you needed to perform a clean install?

What do you mean by the phrase "a normal one"? My guess is that you used
a generic OEM installation CD of XP (Home or Pro?) with SP3. Am I right?

Sounds like hardware to me. The very first thing I would do is clear the
CMOS chip. Check your documentation (online if you need to). There
should be a jumper you can move and then move back. Or take out the
motherboard battery for 30 minutes and put it back in (or perhaps even
replace with a newer battery).

If still no joy, boot off a Knoppix or Ubuntu CD and report back
whether or not the PC continues to shut off.

Instead of a subjective "not extremely hot," run CoreTemp and post back
with actual numbers.

I wonder if the CPU temp *sensor* is feeding wrong information and as a
result, the PC automatically shuts off as a safety measure.

Have you checked for errors in the Event Viewer?

Run the Prime95 stress test while in Windows. (You don't have to "join GIMPs"
to do the stress test.)

http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft/

http://mersenneforum.org/gimps/p95v259.zip

If you need usage instructions, there are pictures here.

http://www.playtool.com/pages/prime95/prime95.html

What you're looking for in this case, is whether the heating
of the CPU caused by Prime95, causes the computer to shut off
faster. If it does, chances are you have a heat problem. You
would then examine any filters in the computer for dust,
disassemble the blower assembly from the CPU heatsink, verify
the CPU clips that hold the heatsink in place are still present
and so on.

The ultimate step is to remove the heatsink, clean off the
thermal interface material, and apply a thin coating of
a new material. If you don't feel comfortable doing this,
take it to a repair shop.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835100009

Download a PDF here, to get help on installation. You don't want
to use too much. You can do a test install, apply a dot of paste,
squash the heatsink into it, fasten clips or pins or whatever,
then take it apart again and verify the degree of spread. That
tells you whether you're using the right amount or not.

http://www.arcticsilver.com/ins_route_step2intelcmq.html

One reason to use caution, is you don't want to get that stuff
in the socket or pins or contacts. It can cause unreliable
contact with the CPU if that happens. So if a lot of it oozes out,
it can get into places it is not supposed to go.

When I apply it, I try to visually examine the heatsink to processor
contact area from the side, and verify there is a little bit of
paste showing in the gap between processor and heatsink. That
proves it is coating all the way to the edge.

The motherboard is pretty small. I see four holes around the CPU socket,
so perhaps the heatsink screws into place ? They're also using a low
power processor, so if it is overheating, maybe the heatsink isn't
making contact at all.

A sudden shutdown without restart is generally caused by hardware failure.
The failure is often caused by heat, and such damage will not heal. There
are a number of components that are possibly damaged, some are not removable
(embedded on the motherboard).

Unfortunately, the diagnostic method is often to swap in other known-good
parts; it's time-consuming and you have to actually have the known-good
parts.

The system had 85 processes on the startup and became very slow
Yes retail originally xppro and with winlite I add the sp3
Nothing in the event viewer
I took out the battery for 30min, when the bios came I see Default
settings loaded

I run the prime 95 for few minutes and the dissipator became hot,
using the CoreTemp I found the CPU at 55c (when the dissipator is
really hot, not like normally when the computer shuts down) but the
computer didnt shut off.

Afterwards I run 2 movies at the same time one with wmp and the 2nd
with media classic and after 5 minutes the computer turnoff.

Ill try with the ubuntu...

UPDATE:

When I run a mpeg the computer can run it for a long time, when I try
with a Divx, the computer shutdown suddenly after 10 min max.

Please any ideas?
