so sick of changing icons

My icons in my address bar and on my desktop keep changing. For example,
Yahoo has a Y for a favicon so when you save a shortcut the Y tells you what
the shortcut is to but all I have now for all my internet shortcuts on my
desktop and in my folders are blue e's. I have blue e's everywhere. No G for
geekstogo.com. No Y for yahoo.com. Nothing in the address bar but e's. I am
sooooo sick of e's I could scream. I get them right and poof they disappear
again. Then poof they are bad months later. It is driving me nuts. Anyone
know the cause and cure for such stupidity. They were working fine an hour
ago!

They're called Favicons. They are stored in Temporary Internet Files (TIF)
and are lost when TIF is cleared or they expire out of TIF. They can be
preserved with this program:

FavOrg:

or get AM-Deadkink

Anything that is associated with Internet Explorer (since it is your default
Internet Explorer) will reflect how that file/hyperlink is opened.

Anything that is .htm, .html, .mht, .domainname (.com, .net, ...) will be
re-associated each time the system rebuilds the System ShellIconCache.

This is normal rebuild each time the system is booted ... or your associate
something to an application.

That favorg did not work. The deadkink fixed my favorites but did not update
the shortcuts on my desktop. I tried rebooting 3 times and it didn't help. I
tried to create a new link and it did not work.

Once you have extracted all of the Favicons, the icons must be placed in a
new folder and associated with the links on your desktop.

Create a new folder called "ICONS" on the C: drive and place all of the
favicons in this folder. Right click a shortcut that you wish to use one of
these icons on and select Properties/Change Icon button. Navigate to the new
ICONS folder and select the icon you wish to use. Click OK/Apply/OK.

That shortcut will now retain the selected icon forever.

It is a bit of work, but worth the effort to relieve the frustration.

I did that before I thought. I did a search for favicon and copy and pasted
all of them into a folder. It seems though that all I copied was internet
shortcuts and not the favicons themselves. Could you tell me how to do this
correctly?

I changed the folder that my icons are stored in but I am still losing them
from my address bar even though they are bookmarked. Why will they not show
up in my address bar again?

Why can't I see my favicon in the address/location bar?
In Internet Explorer, click the icon in the address bar. Hold down the
button and move the icon a tiny bit to the right and let go. Try this two or
three times. Usually that is all you need to do!

That was cool and it works GOOD but the problem is I own a website. I made
this icon for those who visit my website. It is my trademark. I need people
to see that when they visit my site everytime but most people have never
heard of that trick you showed me. I just learned it myself as you know so
how can the ordinal joe blow see my icon at all times?

Debra,

If it makes you feel any better, I have to do that to see the favicon in my
address bar in Internet Explorer @ http://favicon.com/ LOL

I am no expert on this, I just knew about the little fix.

And MS sez...

The only way a shortcut icon appears on a user's Favorites menu and Address
bar is if the user chooses to add your page as a favorite. You can add a
button or link on your page that prompts the user to add your page.
from...
How to Add a Shortcut Icon to a Web Page
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/workshop/Author/dhtml/howto/ShortcutIcon.asp

Look around here...
http://favicon.com/

It only took me twice @ www.In-His-Service.org to see the favicon. <shrug>

Maybe someone who knows more than I do will post.

For most people the favicon will go away whenever their temporary cache
is emptied. Steps can be taken to avoid this, but most people don't know
how or won't bother. That's life.

Wesley,

We talked recently about my favicons not showing up in my address bar. You
told me the trick about grabbing the icon and moving it to the right a few
times and it worked right off. Now I cannot get it to work at all on any
site. Any idea why that would have happened?

FYI, I stopped a svchost.exe that was running in my task manager using
60,000K and my system restore and favicons in my address bar started working.
So you will know that might be the problem with other users. I don't know
what to do about it but I wanted to let you know. If you know anything about
what to do to fix it let me know. I went to Microsoft Article Q314056 but
this thing is so embedded that I cannot run the things it says to run. I can
only go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Svchost and
see a list of stuff but don't know what to do with any of it.

Debra,

Forget about....
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Svchost

First, Svchost.exe can also be malware.

It is possible to have both a malware version of Svchost.exe running and
*several* instances of the legitimate Svchost.exe running.

UPDATE your antivirus software and run a full system scan.

UPDATE whatever anti-spyware applications that you have and run a full
system scan with each one.

You might want to start in Safe Mode to run your antivirus and anti-spyware
software.

Running a full system antivirus scan or anti-spyware scan in Safe Mode can
be a good idea. Some viruses and other malware like to conceal themselves
in areas Windows protects while using them. Safe mode will prevent those
applications access and therefore unprotect the viruses or other malware
allowing for easier removal.

Second...

Tasklist.exe does not come with Windows XP Home. It only comes with Windows
XP Pro.

The following works. I did it when I had XP Home.

1. Download Tasklist.exe.

Tasklist.exe available here:
http://www.computerhope.com/download/winxp.htm

Or...

http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/

Microsoft Windows XP - Tips & Fixes
Click on:
Tasklist.exe - Lists all processes & services (/Svc)

Or...

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/utils/tasklist.zip

2. Copy tasklist.exe to

C:\WINDOWS\system32
or
%windir%\system32

3. Open a Command Prompt.

Start | Run | type: cmd | Click OK |
When the Command Prompt window opens type:

tasklist /svc

Hit your ENTER key.

Also:

tasklist /?

Displays Help and usage.
