Desktop Shortcut Icons Graphics sometimes change.

I would like to know how to keep the graphics within the Shortcut Icons to
remain stable. The Icons that have proprietary graphics are easier to see on
the Desktop without having to read the information bar underneath. However,
when I restart the computer those graphics become no longer visible, but get
replaced with the default big E shortcut.
Some do change (usually shortcuts for popular websites), some don't change
(usually those icons associated with a system program), there seems to be a
setting somewhere that I am missing?
Any help would be appreciated,
Many thanks,

hi,

the best way to over this issue is to copy the icon file on to your my
documents folder and then change the dispaly icon. hope this is confusing let
me brie it

Microsoft has made every effort to make Internet Explorer and Internet
related files to appear as though it's the only choice for browsing the web.
This is the reason why the webpage was looking something different and when
the system is restarted the icon changes to the BIG "E". Do not worry here is
an work around i am talking about.

Try to download or copy the icon file to your local drive and then try to
follow the steps below:

1. Run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE).
2. open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ InternetShortcut.
3. Double-click on the EditFlags value (in the right pane), and change it's
contents to 00 00 00 00.
4. Next, open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ InternetShortcut\ shellex, and delete the
IconHandler key (in the left pane).
5. Close the Registry Editor when you're done.
6. Then, open Explorer, select Folder Options from the View menu, and choose
the File Types tab.
7. Find and select Internet Shortcut on this list, click Edit, and then
click Change Icon.
8. When you're done choosing an icon, click Ok in each open Window.

IF you want you can even choose your own picture of your choice and convert
it as an icon file using the software. to do so use the website below. but
please be aware you have to purchase it or use the trail version and check
for the functionality.

Hope this helps.

Websites can supply a customized icon called a favicon. It is stored in
your Temporary Internet Files (TIF) folder. As long as that file is
present, your internet shortcuts will display the customized icons. Clear
your TIF folder (or as newer cached files take the place of old ones), the
favicons are deleted. Windows replaces the deleted favicon with the blue
"E."

Workaround: grab the icons out of TIF. Move them to a folder. Edit your
internet shortcuts to point to the "rescued" favicon file (Properties>
Change Icon). You can do this manually or try one of the "favicon" programs
that automate the process for you. A search at google.com or your favorite
search engine should turn one up. Here's one that I've not tried but did
find with a google search:
