Smartcard logon problem after coming back from standby

Windows XP Sp1 on notebook with a certain SmartCard Reader to use PIN prompt
in place of Windows logon.

Typical scenarios

1. Upon booting and when GINA prompt for smartcard, the user inserts the
smartcard and logon happens without using Windows logon authentication

Two scenarios: one *with manual screenlock* and one *without screenlock*
prior to getting into standby mode

2. NO SCREENLOCK PRIOR TO STANDBY - If the user decides to go on standby
mode from a working session (i.e. desktop still apears), he presses STANDBY
button on the notebook and pulls out the smardcard. Upon resuming the work,
he presses POWER button with smartcard already inserted; however the GINA pin
prompt does not come up.

Occasionally, pulling out the card and re-inserting it may bring up the PIN
prompt but most of the time still no PIN prompt. The user could not log on
via Windows login prompt either, and a hard reboot is required

This problem happens regardless the notebook is in office or at home using
VPN to connect to office

3. SCREENLOCK PRIOR TO STANDBY - If the user decides to go on standby mode
from a working session (i.e. desktop still apears), he manually puts the
notebook on screenlock mode then presses STANDBY button on the laptop and
pulls out the smardcard. Upon resuming the work, he presses POWER button with
smartcard already inserted; with this scenario the PIN prompt always comes up
with successful logon.

This problem unfortunately occurs to some but not all notebooks of same
hardware and same smartcard brands.

Thanks for any advice

Offhand I don't know what the problem is but I suggest you also post in the
Microsoft.public.security.crypto newsgroup. --- Steve
