Why do I have to re-select this useful feature every time I open a new
document, even though I have it selected in my template file?
Word 7.
Thanks,

I assume you mean Word 2007 (Word 12)?

Settings in Word Options are stored in the Word Data key in the registry -
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data registry subkey

Minor corruption in this sub key can cause it not to retain user changes.
You can delete or rename the key with Word and Outlook closed and Word will
build a new one when next started. If that fails to hold you may have to
resort to brute force tactics and set the option by macro.

Graham,
Thanks for replying.
Right, Word 2007.
Will your (less-drastic) solution affect any other settings, preferences,
etc.?
Best regards,

Alan

It will reset to install defaults all the settings in Word Options. Rename
the key to OldData and see if it sorts the problem. If not you can delete
the newly created Data key and rename your OldData key back to Data and all
your settings will be restored.
