"smart" cursoring

As the cursor is moved across text it "intelligently" grabs whole
words, sometimes not as desired. Can one turn this silly feature off
in XP?

I don't think this is an inherent feature of XP. In what applications does
this occur? Perhaps it's a feature in that (those) apps that you may or may
not be able to disable - look in Tools/Options.

Val,
You're right, because it occurs in a much milder in way in Notepad
than in, say, Word2003 or in this text box as I now write. In your
string "I don't think" put the cursor between the "o" and the "n", and
move it to the right. When it reaches the second "t" suddenly the
entire two words "don't think" are selected. Where in Internet
Explorer 7.0 is there a tool for cursoring?

I don't see it at all in Notepad.

It does seem to be a "feature" of IE and of OE. Firefox does not exhibit
this behavior.

I cannot find any obvious setting to control this - there might be a
registry hack.

You're right again. In Notepad, as the cursor sweeps (in either
direction) across a character nothing happens until about the middle of
the character, then the whole character is selected. This is
reasonable since it is characters rather than pixels which are being
selected.
So, how does one find out whether the registry offers options? Is
there an XP registry group?
Thanks.

DC,
I've hunted around and can't find anything of help.

There are several newsgroups dealing with Windoze Registry - check for
what's available to you via google or a proper newsreader.
