smart card reader

I need to download photos but haven't been able to figure out where to find
them on the usb-connected card reader. This is a new computer for me -- my
old one recognized the camera, but this one does not so I thought I'd try the
download this way, but so far, no luck. The card reader shows up in the
Device Manager but I can't figure out where the files are. Thanks!

Smart Card Readers are NOT Memory Card Readers.

Now if you have a camera with a SmartMedia Memory card you need a Memory Card Reader capable
of SmartMedia cards.

Personally I use a SanDisk 6-in-1 Memory Card Reader which includes the SmartMedia type of
memory cards.

When they are connected to a PC, a drive letter is created. You access the photos of your
camera by removing the memory card and inserting it in the slot of the Memory Card Reader
and then by going to the drive letter that represents that memor card slot such as "G:".

Smart Card Readers are used inconjunction with Smart Crads which are used in Private Key
Infrastructures to do such things as access PKI protected web sites, sign and/or encrypt
email and authenticate an active Directory logon.

The most famous PKI is the US DoD Common Access Card (CAC) program.

the card reader that I have is part of an accessory pack for my Olympus c700
so I would expect that they are compatible. However, I can't even locate the
device on my computer -- when I plug it into the USB port, the computer
recogized the hardware, did a search for a driver and told me that everything
was working properly. So, now I need to find the device in order to get the
images -- or, am I thoroughly confusing the issue? (I'm new to the whole
digital photography and usb storage thing...)

Like I said, it creates a drive letter such as "G:".

Find it by browsing "My Computer".

thanks for your help. Apparently the problem was that my next available
drive letter was one that I use for my vpn access (which I'm not on right
now) and the camera wanted to use one. I think I'll be okay as soon as I
re-map my vpn drives.

Thanks!

You can also change the drive assignment for the Memory Card Reader.

Execute; %windir%\system32\diskmgmt.msc
