Small and free browser and email client for Win95? TIA

J

JuanMa

Greetings.

I'm looking for a simple internet browser and email client for windows
95 OSR2 (more or less). The browser must have at least java script
capabilities so that it may allow me to check email in places such as
yahoo and hotmail.

I tried installing one of the light versions of Mozilla but it gave me
a missing dll error(xpcom_compat.dll), I also tried downloading
netscape 4.08 but the links weren't available at the time I tried them.

If you have any working direct download links that you can provide me I
will appreciate them.

The email client can be any standards compliant client suitable for
win95.

I would like them to be the smallest in size(installed) as possible
since they are going to be installed in an old computer with a 170MB
HDD. This computer will be as a back-up just in case my main computer
gets damaged.

Thank you.

Take Care.

Here's a link to 4.08 Navigator only which is a 10 meg
file:

http://browsers.evolt.org/?navigator/32bit/4.08navonly

I have a PC like that which just won't quit. It's a Dell
with a 486-66 mhz cpu and 32 meg RAM. It has a 28.8
hardware modem. The h.d. is larger than yours at 270 meg. I
also have Win 95 OSR2 installed on it.

If you decide to go with Navigator 4.08 (which I think is a
good choice under the circumstances) you can gain some h.d.
space by eradicating IE3 using IEradicator. Delete OE as
well. I have the latest versions of Pegasus mail and Free
Agent for news on my old machine and they work very well on
OSR2. In fact, I think I'm going to install Navigator 4.08
on this old PC since I think it might work out quite well.
Right now it has the IE3 that came with OSR2 but I guess
you found that IE3 doesn't have Java Script? BTW, I have
the drive formatted FAT32 which helps.

Thanks Art. My PC is a Pentium-S 133MHz with the 170MB HDD and
32MB RAM, connected to the net via DSL. So far I've been using
OffByOne, XNews and IE 3x(which gives me annoying script
errors).

I have tried Mozilla, Firebird, K-Meleon and so far I haven't
been able to run them, because either is a weird error or a dll
error. I've just downloaded Netscape and I will see if it works
without problems and then use IE eradicator as you suggested.

Thanks again.

Take Care,

I did just install 4.08 on my old PC but haven't done much testing or
checking. I was interested that you have DSL service running on your
old box with OSR2 since I've considered making mine DSL compatible. I
have a spare Ethernet board but it's PCI rather than ISA bus board,
and I wonder about your DSL hardware arrangement. Since I'm wandering
off topic, perhaps we might exchange personal email on this? My email
address is artnpeg at epix dot net. I also have wondered about running
DSL without using my ISP's software (though I'm not sure what
advantage I might gain). I've just heard it can be done but I don't
know what it would take to do it. Anyway, the use of a cheap 56K soft
modem is out of the question I think with a old 486-66 mhz cpu. So it
seems I'd be best off finding out if I can use my DSL service on it
somehow. The catch is that for obvious reasons I'm not about to spend
any money on it. The computer itself has a zero dollar value. I could
pick up a newer PC with a faster cpu, etc., for practically nothing to
use as a backup, and maybe that makes the most sense :) But I have to
say that I really like OSR2. For just email, newsgroup and browsing
activities, having a light weight OS like that seems ideal.

Well, just ran netscape and it works, it tends to pause a while
when loading pages, but no errors so far, Logged in fine to
hotmail and yahoo mail.

My email is roadster3043 at yahoo dot com. I will write you

Glad to see that Netscape 4.08 is working for you.
Just be sure to disable Java/JavaScript/Cookies until you get to the site
where you want to use these features.

You may want to consider a browser addon like WebWasher or Proxomitron

Consider ZoneAlarm 2.6.362 - the last version for Win95
http://www.voodoofiles.com/4860

I use Netscape 4.08 on a Win95 stand-alone machine for surfing.
As Microsoft no longer supports Win95 you may want to make some manual
settings to make your stand-alone Win95 more secure. For example;
- Disable File and Print Sharing
- Rename vnbt.386 in c:\windows\system This is used to share files over the
Internet.
- Delete VNETBIOS folder in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\
This makes things like Nuke, NewkII, SaMBa, etc all worthless as that
little backdoor was written into MS's operating system since the dawn of
Win95. Works for Win95/98. Not sure about the other OS's. If you wish
reinstall the VNETBIOS folder, for networking computers, all you do is go
to Network Configuations and click on Apply and Windows will magically
regenerate the folder. Any time you make any change to your Network
Configuration the VNETBIOS folder will be regenerated.
- Rename Telnet.exe in c:\windows Used for file sharing over the Internet.

etc,...

There are a number of manual changes and third party addons that can help
lock up your computer while you're connected to the Internet. I don't know
how secure you want to make your computer. If you want I'll post what I've
done for Win95. It's up to you.

IE 3x(which gives me annoying script errors)

You need IE 4.01 for the files that are in it. A number of programs require
the files that are in IE 4.01 for those programs to work. After you have
installed IE 4.01 then use IEradicator. Not sure where to find IE 4.01 on
the 'net. I have it on a CD from a magazine. MS doesn't have it. Good
hunting.
