Which Freeware Browser & Email Client +?

S

Semi Head

I'm wanting to use Mozilla as my internet browser, instead of I.E. 5.0.
browser system.
However, because i have an older machine, i need to be sure i get the
right freeware browser version.
I want to make sure that it is compatible with a suggested freeware
email client (& news reader) programs too.
I want a matched system.

My 'puter's hardware & software set-up .
CPU=450 hrz
Ram=256 mg
8.5gig HD
ATI Rage Video Card (32mg)
3 1/2 floppy
Goldstar CDR
&
Magic Writer CDRW.

NOTE:
Just reparationed (single) & reformated my HD & did a 'Clean Install' of
OEM Win-98Se OS. I installed all the 'Critical Windows Updates', except
i did not install I.E. 6.0 & O.E. 6.0 browser programs. I kept the OEM
versions from the original Win-98Se CD.

So my big question is :
With my specific hardware & OS software set-up, what would be the better
choice?

What version of Mozilla should i use & install?
What email (& news reader) client freeware program should use with it?

Currently i use O.E. 5.0. through MSN/Hotmail (HTTP) site.
I use O.E. for my news group reader too.

My IP is "msn.com"

i really respect many of the freeware ng regulars & your opinions would
help my make the correct choices. So, all serious suggestions &
download url info. would be welcomed.

I have a 400MHz 128MB machine & it ran Mozilla 1.7 okay. I've changed to FireFox browser
recently & it works fine. I also changed to Foxmail as it has a couple of functions that aren't
in other email programs. Again, no operational problems.

Your configuration is good enough for any browser and e-mail client.

The slim and agile browser "K-Meleon" is probably even faster than "Opera"
on your rather old computer. If you don't want to work it too much I'll
advice you to use this version of K-Meleon:
http://hch.uwnet.nl/k-meleon/
Remember to install the dll-files first! That download is on the same page.
The default buttons are very small. But there are alternative skins in the
program that are easy to switch between. (A lot of skins on the web, too.)

As a news reader I think "Forte Free Agent" is one of the best.
http://www.forteinc.com/agent/download.php

Some like to have the browser and the news reader in the same program.
"Opera" and "Mozilla" are then very good alternatives.
(Note that you have to accept an advertisement banner in Opera if you
don't pay for it.)

Good luck with your choice.

My choice , is Mozilla Firefox latest version & Pimmy email client .

I have had up to 12 browsers & email clients installed at once , just
a matter of choosing which one you want as default .

each to their own ofcourse, but I have downloaded foxmail and
installed it, and it seems to be blotted.. I like a lean mean
mail programs, so I would recommend mozilla mail client, and
quite possibly web browser. You may want to download them as
a package or individaully, your choice. as to new reader i
agree, xnews is fine, although I'd suggest that you track
down one of the tutorials if you want to get the best out of
the program..

Don't know what you mean with 'blotted'. If you mean bloated, I tried
Thunderbird, but it used more than twice the resources Foxmail uses. K-
meleon is fast as lightning compared to Mozilla or Firefox on my slow
system. Wouldn't know how they run with twice the RAM (which the OP has).

I haven't found Foxmail to be bloated at all - certainly loads a lot faster than Thunderbird on
my ancient 400Mz 128MB machine.

If you're running a fairly old & slow PC, then there is probably a good chance that you are
still on dial-up (I was told my machine is too slow to process the data coming via broadband).

This is the reason why I use Foxmail - because I am on dial-up Foxmail allows me to select the
messages to immediately download from the server & leave others to download later. Really handy
whan there's a few big files waiting for me that I don't want to spend the time downloading when
collecting my other messages.

Foxtool is a very useful add-on to Foxmail.

They told you wrong, my broadband-connection is working good and fast on my
400MHz, 128Mb, win98SE system. I never had any problems with it. It
definetly was worth the ca$h.

I heard a lot about Foxtool, never used it, but I think I'll check it out
somewhere in the next days.
