If I rated my anti-virus product at only 7 out of 10 I'd be looking round
for another one :)

I've given up chasing the best one as it seems to vary from one review to
the next.

Like the look of this one but when trying to install it says it can't
find Oriens Enhancer Gold and to enter the installation path for it. Any
ideas?

Not sure why it wanted it but I told th einstaller where the
OriensEnhamcerGold installer was and Mr Tech Systray finished its
installaion.

Seems promising but it says I have a 95mhz Duron instead of a 1.3Ghz and
it says I don't have Adaware installed when I do, so not too sure about
it.

Quite an extensive list!

Most of what's on my computer is freeware, but there's not much of it
that I like *that* much better than the alternatives. Firefox is one
of the things I use most, but PowerPro is probably the only one I'd
really find hard to replace.

The same here, 80% of my software is freeware. The things I can't/won't
replace are Photoshop, EAGLE (a CAD package), and mIRC (registered,
paid for).

I suspect that a better topic would be:

Freeware which is better than payware.

For me, keynote, convert & phonedeck fit into
this category. I don't know of any payware
which suits my needs as well as these programs.

It did not work.

Thanks. I just posted my links in TXT, RTF, and Treepad Lite format to the
binaries group. (Does anyone know of a service that will host small files
for a little while?) Comments welcome.

Bob Adkins rated his freeware on his site. That's what Paul Blarmy was
referring to.

sha

mine (and this is the stuff I use for fun/productivity as the security [imo]
essentials like anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewalls etc have been pretty
much covered)

the Gimp - graphics program with a fantastic set of features- apparently the
GUI is not everyone's cup of tea, but I think it's great

http://www.gimp.org/

Quick Time and Real Time Alternative (with Media Player Classic) - let you
access Quick Time and Real streaming media without all the clutter (to put
it politely) that comes with QT and Real Player.

Virtual Dub -video editor. I can't do everything I'dl ike to be able to do,
but it's the best freeware video editor I've used

http://www.virtualdub.org/

Winamp - my fave media player

http://www.winamp.com/

DVDShrink - fit a 2 hour plus DVD onto a single DVD-R

http://www.dvdshrink.org/

Phobia III - best freeware game I've ever played. Think of Starship Troopers
on speed! Official site is no more, but it can be downloaded from here.
(Warning, it's a *big* d/l, almost 90 mb)

http://www.acid-play.com/download/phobia-iii/

Audacity - multi track audio recorder/editor

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Cecilia - a graphical front end for the audio DSP program Csound. Let's the
user access Csound's DSP functions by means of a graph instead of having to
learn the CSound programming language. For effects you *wont* get with
Audacuty ;)

http://music.ucdavis.edu/re4m/cecilia/

free VST plugins; I have and use far too many to list properly, but special
mention goes to VReorder, the DestroyFX stuff, Shapee, Ether, Tapeworm, MDA
(over 40 from this guy, most are very good), ioplong's plug-ins, MP3Play
(let's you load mp3 files into vst hosts), Throbber (a virtual
Gristleizer!).....all can be found via Google, but if anyone has trouble
finding a particular plug-in let me know and I'll post the URL.

Photoshop: GIMP does a pretty good job, but isn't as powerful

mIRC: HydraIRC is excellent
