Slower Shutdown Since SP2 Install?

M

MB

Since installing SP2, my computer is taking a longer time
shutting down. It hangs on the "please wait while
shutting down" screen, then gives me the speaker "beep"
that normally coincides with the actual shutdown but
keeps on going for a couple of seconds, then it shuts
down. I haven't timed it yet but it is most definitely
slower after the SP2 install. Any thoughts? Please e-
mail to (e-mail address removed)

Yes, I have a thought. My thought is that this is a newsgroup, not a send
me help by email group.
Also putting your email address here is an invitiation to spam at least and
perhaps viruses and back doors too.

Try a Defrag. That helped me.

I don't e-mail people either. But putting your address in the message
body does not leave it vulnerable to Spammers. Only if it shows under
Properties>Details. The OP used the CDO and did not give the address
there.

Don't know why this works, but it often does.
Just before you shut down, go to Start > Run and
then type in "net stop spooler" without the quotes
and then tap the Enter key. Then do your normal
shutdown. Let us know how it work for you.

You're absolutely right about posting e-mail addresses in
newsgroups, I appreciate the head's up.

As far as using the newsgroup as "a send me help by email
group", I can honestly understand your position as far as
all of these annoying requests for help from people not
in the know who can't afford to pay Microsoft or whomever
every time they run into a problem. If you have any other
suggestions as far as where I can obtain help next time I
need it, I'm all ears. Microsoft specifically stated
that I could obtain help via these newsgroups, sorry for
any misinterpretations on my end. And thanks again for
the advice on using e-mail addresses in newsgroup posts,
I will not make the same mistake again.

Thanks Bruce. I did a defrag both before and after the
SP2 install, no luck. But I do appreciate the thought
and effort.

Z, I actually ran a search on information relative
to "Net Stop" functions, pretty interesting stuff,
sounded a little complicated and not without potential
issues but I may give it a try. Thanks again.

Rock, this was very helpful, particularly the section on
slow shutdowns. Thank you very much, MB

It seems that SP2 puts the WaitToKillServiceTimeout in the registry back on
20000. Could this be the parameter to limit the shutdown time?
