sudden shutdown on send and receive

I use a dell inspiron 9300, running xp (sp2) pro.
When using a mail client, outlook / outlook express or mozilla thunderbird,
as soon as I press "send & receive" on any mail client the machince suddenly
shuts down. There is no warning of the shutdown, just a loud beep and the
machine is dead. It does not shut down using any procedure just a beep then
the machine is off. On startup, there is no notification that windows
shutdown suddenly or unexpectedly - it just starts up normally. What could be
the problem here ?

What is the virus/malware state of the machine? If you think it is
clean, what did you use/do to determine that? Please state the names of
the programs, versions, etc.

Just an idea, but try turning off any antivirus programs that you have.
Many of them scan outgoing and incoming emails, regardless of which
email client you use.

If that solves the issue, you can try another antivirus, or you can try
disabling the email scanning feature.
