computer shuts down randomly

I have a Toshiba laptop with XP home (version 2002- SP2) which has been
shutting down unexpectedly. if I try powering up as soon as it shuts down the
computer will shutdown yet again. Either during startup or as soon as the
desktop appears. If I wait a few minutes it almost always boots up normally
on the first try. Anyone have any idea what this is about?

One possibility that fits is overheating. It may be the CPU fan has failed.
Can you hear the fan running?

Blow out any dust and debris blocking the vents. In addition to
overheating check the ran using these two diagnostics. You'll need to
download them on a different computer as an .iso. Burn to CD and use it
to boot the laptop. Let each run for several hours, not just one pass.
