slow xp startup

hi i am experiencing a strange occurence with xp home,
the machine boots as usual but even though my desktop is
visible the computer is unusable for approx 3 minutes. if
i press control/alt/delete upon bootup it displays 19
processes running. during the 3 mins required to function
the processes climb to 24. I have recently installed
norton systemworks 2004 but have most options turned off
to prevent it taking over my machine. another change to
my machine may have been caused by booting with a win
98se startup disk, could this have caused the problem?
any help would be appreciated.
many thanks

To help troubleshoot click start, run, and type msconfig
in the box,
click selective startup, unclick load startup items,
click apply then
restart your computer and see if its faster. If it is
then you have
malicious .exe or .dll files in your computer and need to
remove them.

Check to see if you have spyware running in the
backround. Free download. ADAWARE works for me.
