Slow XP Boot 10-15 Minutes, Safe Mode w/ Net Okay

S

Scott Townsend

I can start in Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking Support, and it fires
right up.
If I just let it boot normally it takes over 10-15 minutes to come up. Once
its up, its fine. No Speed issues. When I let it boot normally the HD light
is pretty much on solid and at about the time in safe more that it boots and
the light goes out for a bit, booting normally it just sits there and the HD
light may flicker once or twice a minute.

I've Tried:
MS Config
Selective Start up - MS Services only - Sits there at the WinXP
Logo w/ the blue still scrolling Progress Bar
Diagnostic Start up - Sits there at the WinXP Logo w/ the blue still
scrolling Progress Bar

There seems to be something Network/Time related as if I switch to a
Different subnet 3 out of 8 times it would boot fine. If you let the machein
sit unplugged for several minutes and then turn it on, it also seems to boot
just fine.

Could this be like a checkdisk running in the background that is not invoked
in Safemode?

Thanks,
Scott<-

Hi Scotter,

I noticed that you posted a same problem in
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general newsgroup. This happens on the same
machine?

My Suggestion is:

1. unplug the network cable to see if it helps.

2. I notieced that you have installed Norton application, please
temporarily remove it to see the results.

3. I suspect there may be some hardware driver issue within the system, I'd
like to suggest you perform a repair installation, you can follow the steps
as below:

1) Place the Windows XP CD in the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
2) If the Windows CD displays the What would you like to do? menu, click
Exit.
3) Turn off your computer, wait ten seconds, and then turn your computer
back on.
4) If you are prompted to start your computer from the CD, do so.
5) After Windows XP Setup starts, press ENTER to continue the setup process.
6) Press ENTER to choose the option "To set up Windows XP now, press
ENTER". Do not choose the Recovery Console option.
7) Press F8 to accept the licensing agreement.
8) At this point, the Setup program will search for previous installations
of Windows XP.

- If Setup does not find a previous installation of Windows XP, then
you might have a hardware failure.
- If Setup does find a previous installation of Windows XP, then the
following message will appear:

If one of the following Windows XP installations is damaged, setup can
try to repair it. Use the up and down arrows to select an installation. To
repair the selected installation Press R. To continue without repairing,
Press Esc.

9) Choose the appropriate installation of Windows XP, and then press R to
attempt to repair it.
10) Follow the remaining directions on your screen.

For more detail about repair installation, please refer to link below:

Hope this helps.

I had similar problem after shipping my PC from Japan to USA. It turned out
to be a faulty hard drive - probably dropped during shipping. New HD fixed
it right away. Hope you have a backup of your disk.

Hi,

I think Bubba's suggestions is reasonable. Scotter, please backup the HD as
well.

Thanks.
