hi folks, working on a machine here running windows XP home. Its
really-r-e-a-l-l-y s--l--o--w at loading anything. For instance, just to
open my computer it can take 3 minutes to open. The guy had a virus but
wasn't convinced it had gone, so called me. he hadn't disabled system
restore, so I did that, and re-ran his virus checker (PC-Cillin) which was
up to date. Found nothing. Got his ad-aware up to date and ran that, which
found nothing except a few tracking cookies. Got rid of them ok. Had a look
at his processes that were running, couldn't see anything ringing any alarm
bells. The processor usage though was all over the place. Anything from 0%
to hard up against the 100% mark for a few seconds, then anywhere in between
while I was watching it. He fired it up this morning and it seemed to be ok,
after I'd been there the day before, but said it deteriorated this
afternoon. This got me thinking about hardware and temperature problems....
What do ya reckon? Also while its in this unco-operative mood it freez es up
a lot, and gets lots of "not responding" errors. I'm heading back there
tomorrow morning to see how it performs on the 1st boot up of the day, but
meanwhile any suggestions would be appreciated. this guy is not exactly
ignorant, he designs web pages as a business, so he's got a few clues. I'll
probably try a few more spyware programs, but apart from that, I'm getting
to the bottom of the barrel full of ideas! Cheers

I see no responses yet... Gotcha stumped?? I ran some more spyware checkers
this morning, and am starting to suspect the HDD. Its stops every now and
then and makes a bit of a stuttering noise, although I've heard worse fromm
a hard drive for sure. Meanwhile everything else stops, almost like there's
a damaged sector there which its trying hard to read, squinting and
re-reading it, finally understanding what it says, and firing it up. My
next step is to analyse the hdd, but that will be tomorrow. meanwhile here's
a copy of the Hijack this log, if anyone knows how to analyse it.. thanks

Hi Tony, I have a dell dimension 2400 and a compaq nx9030 laptop that both
behave as you describe. I seem to have done all that you have but I am not
bight enough to know what to do about the hijack this log. I run a home
wireless net. Recently installed sp2 on dell but compaq is still on sp1. Did
you resolve this problem cos I could do with some ideas.

My
next step is to analyse the hdd, but that will be tomorrow. meanwhile here's
a copy of the Hijack this log, if anyone knows how to analyse it.. thanks
