Slow Startup

I have 2 Laptops that have suddenly started to take 2 - 3 minutes to boot
after logging in. After logging the laptops seem to just sit there doing
nothing then suddenly spring to life.

However I have noticed that if you just sit at the window saying press Ctrl
+ Alt + Delete for 2 -3 minutes then login the system bursts into live at
once.

It doesn’t matter who is logging in so it's not a profile issue.

Can anybody help me resolve this without a rebuild of Windows?

I am running XP Pro SP2

Thanks

What is your anti-virus programme? Is it scheduled to do a full scan at
the time you are starting your computer?

How much RAM memory?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the
System and Application logs in Event Viewer relating to the last boot in
normal mode . No Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate
which also appear in a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Hi Gerry,

The only error is about W32Time not being able to update. The system has 2GB
of ram, and is running Sophos.

The strange thing is that if you don't login right away but leave it for 2
-3 minutes then login there is no delay.

How do boot times compare between safe mode and normal mode? How do
times compare if only keyboard, mouse and monitor connected? Have you
tried creating a new user profile and comparing times?

I seem to have it sorted now. The boot times were significantly different
between safe mode and normal. Different users all experienced the same time
lag.

However, one user did say it seemed faster when on the network through WiFi
and not Ethernet. So I disabled both the WiFi and LAN cards and booted.
Laptop came up instantly. So I enabled each card, one at a time and now it
works fine with both cards enabled.

Strange as I never re-installed any drivers.

Thanks for your help.
