Desktop will not load until I press esc

Recently the Windows desktop on my laptop will not load until I press
the esc. key. It comes up to the login prompt, and I hit ctr-alt-del
and log in. Then it brings up the background, and just sits. I then
press esc, and the desktop immediately loads. Any Ideas?
