xp pro - *very* slow startup

E

i'm running xp pro on my laptop and it's suddenly taking at least 15
mins to startup and get to my desktop. once there, things run fine
except that i can't access system restore. i've done a repair install
but that hasn't helped. i recently did a clean install and really
don't want to have to do it again. startup takes longest after i've
entered my password. it sits at the blue welcome screen for 10 mins,
hd working. any ideas?

Hello,

Have you looked at how many items you have set to startup on your system?
You can do this by clicking the Start button, selecting Run and then type
MSCONFIG and click ok.

Select the Startup tab and you can see how many items you have set to
startup. Have you scanned your system for spyware/adware?

How good is your housekeeping?

Regular and effective housekeeping is essential. What you do and how
often you do it will depend
on how you use your computer. A suggested routine may include:

1. Run Disk Cleanup. Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk
Cleanup with Temporary Internet Files, Offline Web Pages (optional),
System Restore
( more Options tab )and Recycle Bin selected for deletion. If you have
more than one drive /
partition you may need to do this operation for each drive / partition.
2. Run Disk Defragmenter.

What anti-virus, firewall and antispyware software are you using? Are
all definitions up to date?

Hope this helps.

defragged hd, still didn't help. it does this even when i boot to safe
mode so i can't figure what's causing this.
