startup

It can take 15 mins for startup to stop causing delays whilst I try to load
'office' or whatever to undertake my work. I don't consider myself a techy
and have followed advice re start|Run|msconfig to see what is listed.
There's 42 of them which in itself is worrying. How do I know if they are
necessary (McAfee gives all clear on virus and has firewall etc) and
therefore what can be safely stopped, re stopping what is best advice.

some examples of files on startup:
smax4pnp; tfswctrl; IntelMEME; LVCOMSX; REGSHAVE; SiteAdv; ctfmon

As ever grateful for the excellent advice I always receive.

You can use the startup program from http:\\www.mlin.net instead of msconfig and
that will suffice in most cases.
You can then experiment as the program allows you to switch off programs and put
them back on again. If you download it you will find the program sitting nicely
on the control panel where it is called startup

It's quite possible McAfee is the culprit! It's a well-known resource
hog. Additionally, you probably have it configured to scan your entire
hard drive each time you boot up your PC. It's better to schedule scans
while you're away from your PC (e.g., while you're asleep!).

The first thing I would do is boot up in Safe Mode and see if you have
any issues.

Also, how much RAM do you have? And in Task Manager, click on the
Performance tab. Look under Commit Charge (K) in the lower left-hand
corner. What are the values for Total, Limit, and Peak?

Regarding unnecessary processes, have a look at:

Daave, The total limit peak are 562k, 1274k and 683k respectively, whats the
implication of these?

You still need to tell us how much RAM you have installed. Otherwise,
it's impossible to determine how much you're using the pagefile.

And I hope you're omitting some digits in those figures. Otherwise
something's REALLY wrong!
