Slow speed, short range on a wireless XP notebook

Erwin

I have two notebooks on an Linksys 802.11g wireless network. Both use the
same type of wireless card and I've swapped the cards with no difference in
the results.

The older notebook [PII-450, 318MB RAM] , running Win98, has good signal
strength anywhere in the house and scores high on broadband speed tests. The
newer notebook [Athlon-M, 512MB RAM], running WinXP Home SP1, has limited
range and scores much lower on the same speed test.

Any ideas on how to get the XP unit to perform better?

Thanks,

E

Thank you both for replying. The machine is with my wife and won't return
until the weekend. When it does, I'll try your suggestions.

Win98 is a very simple no frills type of networking OS, XP on the other hand
is a very tight, secutiy intense, networking OS. Do you have a name for your
network? if you do not then check the following (on the Xp machine):

Right click on "My Network Place" and go to Properties
Right Click on Wireless Network Settings and choose properties
Click on the Wireless Networks Tab
The box "Use Windows to congfigure my wireless network setting should be
checked
You may see information in Available Networks and Preferred Networks, This
should match the setting that are in your Wireless Modem or Router should
match.

Hope that this helps
Mike

Possible driver/client software issue. On the XP machine you want the
latest driver software available. If you are using a Linksys WPC54G, new
drivers were released 08/26/04. See:
