Slow Download Speeds on XP Wireless Machines

Erwin

I recently posted a question about slow download speeds on an XP laptop.
Many thanks to the two responses but, unfortunately, your suggestions didn't
help.

Now, I find a different variation of the same problem.

I have three machines networked on a Linksys 802.11g system. The desktop
runs XP and is hard-wired to the broadband [cable] router [WRT54GS]. An XP
laptop and a 98 laptop are connected with 802.11g wireless cards [WPC54GS].

The networking aspect of the system works great. All of the machines can see
each other as well as the two printers that are connected to the desktop.

My problem lies in the performance of the XP machine. The hard-wired
desktop routinely reaches internet download speeds of 1.6+ Mbps and so does
the 98 wireless laptop. The XP wireless laptop maxes out at about 400Kbps
and the range of the machine in the house is much shorter than the 98
laptop.

I recently wanted to move the desktop away from the router/modem so I
purchased and installed a Linksys 802.11g wireless PCI adapter. Everything
hooked up fine and, as before, all of the machines and printers can
communicate. But, now the desktop can only reach download speeds of about
400kbps.

I've been farting around with settings for a couple of days but can't seem
to make any headway in getting either XP machine to perform as well as the
98 unit [and no I'm not going back to 98 on the other two].

Any suggestions or comments? Do other people have XP wireless machines that
*don't* have degraded broadband performance?
