slow wireless speed

I have three computers connected thru one new linksys 310 router to
cable. All computers are "B/G" NICs

desktop with gigabyte link runs over 7Mbps speed test.
laptop1 runs 2.7Mbps
laptop2 runs 2.1Mbps
upload speed maxes out at 358kbps on all - IP max.
all the same speed test, destination and right after one another.

lt1 shows constant 54.0Mpbs under wireless network connection window
and lt2 shows 26-34Mbps but will reach 54Mbps at times.
Sounds like lt2 is falling back because of low signal, but........
signal strength is max on both and both are in the same small room,
4-8 ft from router.

How can I troubleshoot the reason for the varying speed of lt2????????

First, confirm that "Mbps" is "Mega *bits* per second" and not "Mega
*Bytes* per second". ( The latter is usually abbreviated MB/s as
opposed to Mb/s).

How is test being run? Is Laptop 1's wireless network card powered off
when testing Laptop 2? Wireless bandwidth is shared and background
network accesses from Laptop 1 could affect Laptop 2's overall network
speed.

Check to see if there are other wireless networks in your vicinity on
the same channel. Only channels 1, 6, and 11 are non-interfering on a
G network. Interference from these neighboring networks can affect
overall bandwidth.

How is the speed measured? Microsoft networking protocol (NetBT) is
much slower than FTP, for example. Is the speed being measured from
Laptop 1 to Laptop 2 or from Laptop 1/2 to somewhere in the internet?
Are you using Perfmon to give you your throughput numbers or some other
program?

We need more info.

HTH,
John
