I have XP Home edition and a HP Deskjet 3420 Printer. Everything has been
working fine for ages until the other day when the printer took ages to print
even the simplest of text. I have loads of memory left, defragged the
computer and downloaded updated driver but still have the same problem.
Anyone have any adeas??

Under printer and Faxes delete your printer, then
uninstall the printer software, reboot, reinstall the
software, then under Printers and Faxes, add the printer
back, this may re-establish the default settings clearing
up your speed issue.

Secondly it is possible you are having a problem with
your USB port, but cross that bridge after trying the
first plan of action.

Have you installed/uninstalled anything, ran any spyware utilities, system
utilities, updated anything, SP2 applied, checked connections.
What was it you tried to print, and does this happen for everything you
print. Did you uninstall the printer and reinstall it?
Post back with more information and maybe we can find a fix.

HI Michael,
As far as I know I havent installed or uninstalled anything recently but
possibly the kids might of. I am running Norton Internet Security
Professional but have had no problems with that. I did go onto Microsoft for
an update around that time and it did go a bit weird, as in the download was
too long, didnt complete, and now I have the "Downloading Updates" Icon on my
Taskbar. It does nothing however, and is stuck at 0%. Would that have
something to do with it?
When I print even just a simple sentence of text, it does work but takes
about ten minutes to print.

Two things to check, First the printer Queue. Double-Click the
printer and the queue listing will appear with any jobs waiting.
Also, for some unknown reason XP tends to install printers at
a fairly low priority setting (Printer, not XP process).

Printer data is found in the Registry at
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers]
Individual printers will found directly below this key heading:

The two parameters you'll be concerned with are
Priority
Default Priority
The maximum value is 100 (Decimal), although I would only set
the value up to 65-75.

It's also possible that the folder used for print job "Spooling" is
full or has some other issue.
