Slow Internet Downloads but everything else seems fine

In testing my download and upload speed (dslreports.com) I notice that my
laptop isabout 1/5 the speed of other systems (and too slow for video
playback 400-600Kbit/sec on a 6Mb/sec DSL line).
The machine seems to be fine otherwise (execpt for sound stuttering on
startup but it has always done that).
I've removed my network folders, disabled Norton antivirus & Windows
defender & all other network processes that I can find without much success.

Ideas?

Are the other computers on the same router? If not, I would contact your
ISP.

Yes there are other computers on the same router - (4 linux, one more XP and
one W2K ) they're all downloading at above 5 Mb/s. So I'm pretty sure it is
this computer.

Thank you for orcing me to think a little more about the problem.

It appears that the Wireless connection to the machine is slow - wired
Ethernet works fine. I'm connecting 802.11g at 54 mbs but I'm getting 300Kb
thoughput.

Now I need to figure out why the rieless conneciton is so poor!
