Win XP Running slow

My pc has been running slow for a while now. I've finely decided to speed it
up. On a web site I read that a good way to find problems is to go into
msconfig and hide all the Microsoft files and them disable all the other
files in Startup. This I've done and it seems to have solved the problem (Win
takes about 3 mins to load). Beside my Anti Virus files what files should I
make sure I put back? Is there a programme that I can download which will
help with this process? Also can you tell me what I should have in my
regisitry as I sure that its full of junk?

Thanks

First leave the registry alone.
You say the PC is solved, why don't you just leave it? If nothing
fails then don't put them back. However only you know what is loaded
and only you know if you want it.

I do find programs like autoruns very good for disabling startup jobs.

You are putting the cart before the horse. Asccertain what the problem
is before throwing solutions at it.

What is the CPU and how much RAM does your computer have? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties to get this
information.

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

What is your computer make and model?

Hope this helps.

What you choose to start with Windows is entirely up to you. No one -
and no software - can make that decision for you, just as no one can
tell you what clothes to put on in the morning.

If you're "sure" your registry is full of junk, then you must know what
that junk is, right? So get rid of it.

The fact is, there are no shortcuts to learning how to use a computer.
You can choose to be among the savvy computer users, who never seem to
have serious trouble with their computers, or you can choose to be among
the fast-answer crowd, who eventually come back here to moan and
complain about their computers.

To learn the meaning of each startup item in the Startup tab of the
System Configuration Utility, do what we do: start with a web search. (I
didn't come out of the womb knowing what nwiz means.)

You should only edit the registry if you know /exactly/ what you're
doing, and then only after making a backup.

Thanks Leonard. I am learning and I do use the Web .I was just hoping that
someone might have the magic answer. Anyway my PC is much faster now that
I've disabled everything I shall now go back to it (I have two PCs XP and
Vista) and put each one back and do a bit of research into what I'm putting
back.

Big_Al I need to put back at least my Firewall and anti virus?

Absolutely. In fact, it was a very serious error to stop either one.

Not really, he did it as a test to see what was slowing things down.
Now they should be the first to put back and see if they goop everything
up.

Good man. The time you invest now will be more than repaid by the time
you'll save in the future by not having to deal with disasters. And I
know about disasters, trust me.
