Slow internet connection

ABout 6 weeks ago I bought a new pc (pentium 4, 2.8 Ghz, hyperthreading). I
am using IEP 6 as the browser and I have a wireless network. After about 4 to
5 weeks my internet connection became slower and slower. The time to open the
new web page becomes longer and longer, the transfer rate of data when the
connection is established does not seem to be the problem. The other pc in
the netwerk remains working at its normal speed. When I cheque the speed of
the wireless network the average response time is 3 to 4 ms. When I control
the speed of the broadband internet connection I get the following results:
download speed 1228 kbps 153,5 KB/sec transfer rate
Upload speed 416 kbps 52KB/sec transfer rate
I also tried to use fire fox as an alternative browser but no result.
I did also run hitman pro and other utilities to see if there is damaging
software; no results. I reduced the cache in the IEP settings to 1 MB.
Can someone help me to solve this problem?

Hi, just a thought. You issue may be with your ISP. Try giving them a call.

The computer came with only windows XP installed. I did install myself
microsoft office and a virus scanner. The wireless connections functions very
well. Also the other comuters that uses the same connection are working well.

Hi Jan,
A quick response, try to change this computer to another where the other
computer working fine and see if there is any change.
Also what version of AV you installed on your computer and how much space
left after installing Office and the Scanner?.
HTH.

Your Wireless internet connection to this Computer/Laptop can be affected by
the following if all clean from malwares and viruses.

1= You have a wireless Phone near from your wireless network can reduce or
block your connection.

2= If you have a microwave also can affect the wireless connection.

3= Bluetooth devices arround the house, even having a wireless door bell can
contribute to the problem.

4= The sort of technology/Topologies you are using to connect to the
Wireless network, say if you have 802.11a it is not fast and can slow your
connection, it is better if you used 802.11g and there is 802.11n coming soon
but this still under testing and expensive to get.

5 = File sharing on the network can also slow the conection.

6 = Stream music from the web

7 = Where you live is also a factor on how the outside envirment can affect
your wireless network, say you live near from a mast, a radio station,
telephone campany, a electrecity station.

8 = Your neighbor may have a wireless network too interferring with yours if
you didn't set up a SID encription for your wireless connection to be secure.

9 = the way some programs would like to update on start up also can slow
things down with wireless.

10 = A wireless speaker also can affect your connection to the wireless
router and the postion of your computer point to wireless also can be a
factor in slowing down your connection.

11 = Your wireless card make, what make is it and is it compatible with
system and router.

Read this article and see what you can make of it.
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/d9e08acd-9eac-4af8-a4d3-9c6d9e7d5a7a1033.mspx
If all the above doesn't apply to you, you still under warrnty send it back,
but uninstall your Office Apps unless you want to give them free Office suite
for Xmas.

HTH.
Please let us know.

Nass,

Yes sometimes my mobile phone is lying near my wireless and I do use the
slower wireless protocol. But still the response time from the ADSL modem to
the computer is between 3 and 4 milliseconds. The computer has a LAN port so
I will try to get a LAN cable that is long enough to directly connect the
computer to the router and see what happens then. It will take some time
before I can do that.

Best regards,

Jan
