Slow DSL

I was getting 240kbs speed from my 256kbs dsl modem. Since Dec6th I'm only
getting 140-150 kbs speed. Had my telephone guy come out and check the line
with his laptop and my modem. He got 240kbs. My telephone guy said it was
either my computer or my software causing a problem, and he left.
So...What is in Winxp that could cause my DSL speed to slip down and stay
down? What could I check hardware wise?

nick-card is onboard
dsl modem is external
WinXP pro
pentium4 2.4
512 ram

MTU = 1500
RWIN = 11680
TTL = 64
Blackhole = 0
Discovery = 1

To me its not a windows XP problem..its your ISP..possible causes
weather,peak times connection, network overload, etc.very rare any software
has to do with your connection speed...unless its your ISP software!

It happens. Sometimes, with my DSL (cheap), I get speeds
like 120+ KB/S and sometimes 70+ KB/S.

I would love to prove its my ISP that is causing my slowness. But before
doing that, I need to know if its software or hardware related.

Yup correct Matt..sometimes better off to pay $10 more for cable..Have it
and its fast as hell never a problem connecting too.

Before you do anything else, go to this website and test your conection speed. If it is less than what your ISP promises then you have your problem (your ISP). If it is in the normal range of connection speed the problem is on your end

it's possible the telephone company has switched on "interleaving" on your
line. They do this if there is a noisy line problem. Your ISP can verify
this.

Before complaining to to ISP, run anti-virus program to remove any possible
viruses.
Then, run ant-spyware program to remove all the possible "junk" programs
that get installed when on the Internet. Check for all/any possible DSL XP
tweaks.
Close all Internet applications and then try a speed test.

If the speed is not fast, try replacing the cables (telephone and or network
cables) with a better cable.

Y.
