slow drive mappings

Hi,

We have a 2003SBS server with AD/DNS/DHCP/wins and a Linux/Samba
fileserver.
Clients are Windows XP pro in a domain. Users get drive mappings to
the shares on the 2003 and Linux server through a kix script.

When users browse in their windows explorer to their drive mappings
this takes about 10-15 seconds before they open. After this first
time, browsing and copying files is normal/fast. After serveral minuts
of (inactivity to the mapping) connecting or switching to other drive
mappings this is slow again.

The network drives are not disconnected and no errors in the logfiles.
Ping on DNS and Wins names are oke.

any ideas?

Rob, are you mapping across a WAN? If so remove the
mapping and see if the performance is better.

Hi,

-Drive mappings are Lan mappings.
-clients are looking at the DNS on the SBS Server.

Further investigation give me the following extra information.

A mapping from Win98 to linux worked fine.
A mapping from XP to only the Windows SBS server worked fine.

XP removed from domain xyz and placed in workgroup xyz, mappings working oke!!!

Any suggestions,

Regards Rob

Are your client PCs looking only at the DNS on the SBS server?
