Slow Computer Response:

Ok I did it, but Comodo gave me a warning while it. Said it was
typical of virus's.

I'm not too familiar with Comodo, but I would imagine this is a false
positive resulting from the recognition that the Hosts file has been
changed. If you'd like, you can always post to the Comodo forum to learn
more.

I went to the site and replaced the original Host file. One thing, you
mentioned that it might possible slow down my computer but on the Host
site it says it should speed it up in many cases. ??? How often should
I look to this site for Host upgrades?

As a rule, it should speed things up because it will prevent the
downloading of ads in many cases. If the file is over 135 KB, it might
slow down a PC somewhat. So, you need to see what the net effect is.

Some don't like to use a Hosts file and instead prefer using ad blocking
programs like Proxomitron, Privoxy, and WebWasher. Many like using the
Firefox browser with the Adblock plug-in. You might like to read this:

What I meant to say was that while trying to download the 64 bit
version it gave the error but when I downloaded the 32bit it gave no
errors. So all is well.

Since the Host file being installed I haven't noticed any slow down.
However I have noticed in some cases e.g. eBay where the ads didn't
load which I like allot!
I wish sites would restrain their use of ads since allot problems are
caused by them and if for nothing else would present a cleaner look
instead of all these 'billboards' etc. I know that isn't going to
happen, but I think allot of problems would go away if they did.

You didn't say how often I should check

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

for updating my Host file.

I've also noticed a couple of times when my homepage(MSN) loads but
with errors. I assumed these were ads or pop-ups but I just tried it
and it loaded up fine with no errors so maybe they weren't ads or pop-
ups and just a glitch?

All in all things seem to be running fine.

I think now unless you have other suggestions of things I should do I
would like to concentrate on getting an external hard drive. Although
this is a little down the road,.......

I was thinking of getting another Seagate 160GB hard drive like the
one I bought to upgrade from my computer from 40GB, but I see they are
sold out.

Do you have any recommendations?

It was suggested that I also get a PCI card to upgrade from USB1 to
USB2 to improve the transfer rate.

I'll probably also need a USB connector cord to attach the external
hard drive to the computer.

As far as the case I have no ideas other than someone suggested I get
it from Newegg.

I think I will go with Acronis software.

A 64 bit version will not suit your system. You need 32 bit.

Hope this helps.

In passing, just thought you would be interested to know that today I
recieved an email MS Network Security Section for the latest version
security update. I know better than that especially since I have my
computer set to recieve all updates automatically.

Anyway, here's the source:

ATT00001 (3.6 KB), ATT00002 (0.4 KB), patch75.exe (106.7 KB)

this is the latest version of security update, the "January 2008,
Cumulative Patch" update which eliminates all known security
vulnerabilities affecting MS Internet Explorer, MS Outlook and MS
Outlook Express as well as three new vulnerabilities. Install now to
protect your computer from these vulnerabilities, the most serious of
which could allow an malicious user to run code on your computer. This
update includes the functionality of all previously released patches.

I believe this is the W32/Swen worm. Delete the e-mails immediately;
Microsoft *never* sends such e-mails. See:

http://vil.nai.com/vil/Content/v_100662.htm

http://virusbusters.itcs.umich.edu//swen.html

And, Robert, since this is a new topic, it would be best to start a new
thread.

I deleted it as I also thought Microsoft never sends emails. Yes, you
are quite correct, this thread is getting long. If I have other
concerns I will start a new post.

However, once again I want to thank you, Gerry and Ken for taking the
time in helping me and giving me all the useful links and sharing your
knowledge, I appreciate it very much.
