Slow Shutdown

I am experiencing a very slow shutdown and I am not able to install or
update to the newest version of AVG. This started when I installed SP2 which
is probably just coincidental. It takes over three minutes to shutdown
although I have no problem on start up. I have no problems navigating but
the Windows screens freeze, overlap and only partially display while trying
to update AVG. I uninstalled the program and tried re-installing as well as
the update. It takes forever but seems to complete installation. At least I
get a message that it's done but I keep getting a pop up telling me I need
to update AVG every time I boot up. However, the program will not allow
updates. I get a very delayed message saying the update was unsuccessful.
The slow shutdown and inability to update or install this one program seem
to be connected. Any ideas? Would posting a Hijack This provide clues.
Thanks in advance!

I'll assume this is AVG 7.0.289.

Check the Event logs for possible errors. I have a similar problem
whenever my AVG installation goes out of date. In my event log I get 1517
messages (support.microsoft.com/?id=837115). The problems went away after
I [successfully] updated AVG.

Can you download the update manually and update from a folder?
The manual update is at:

Apparently, users are having problems downloading AVG updates when
ZoneAlarm is installed. You may want to temporarily disable firewalls if
that helps. Are you using proxy servers (ask your network admin/isp)?

AVG Free's forum may be able to give extra help. It's at forum.grisoft.cz

See if Verbose Shutdown tells you what's going on (support.microsoft.com/?

If none of the above options help, then you can post the HijackThis log.
