Slow browsing

In the last 3 days I've experienced a slow-down in loading new pages on IE6,
Netscape and Firefox. I'm running Norton Internet Security 2005 on a newly
built machine with XP Professional. So far all scans for malware have come up
with zip. Because it's all three browsers and downloading files seems to be
at normal speed (I'm running Earthlink DSL) I suspect it may be some Windows
settings. Any ideas?

Hi Jack - I would suspect malware of some sort; however, since it's showing
up on all three browsers, it just might be a DNS issue so try this first.
Open a Cmd window (Start|Run, enter Cmd.exe) and then enter the following
with Enter after each line:

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

If that doesn't help, then run the procedures detailed in my Blog, Defending
Your Machine, addy in Signature below. Do ALL steps, in order. UPDATE each
program everytime before using, and if possible do all cleaning from a
'Clean Boot' as Administrator with Hidden Files enabled. Full directions
in the Blog.

Well, I tried the ipconfig commands and the problem is the same. Having
looked at your blog I'll follow that procedure next, though it may be a
couple of days before I can clear enough time. Thanks for your help

Jim,

After several frustrating hours the WinsockxpFix.exe did the trick. I ran
it, rebooted and have the DSL speed back again. Many, many thanks.
