IE 6 slow to load web pages

Hello

Recently Internet Explorer 6 has gone very slow when loading web pages, even
pages I know are normally fats to come up! I am using a broadband connection
and normal e-,mail (Outlook EXpress) and FTP (separate program) all work
normally and at the proper connection speeds. On average I'd say it takes
about 1 minute to load a web page and sometimes a bit longer before all the
graphics have come up.

I have Norton Antivirus and Personal Firewall active.

I tried removing all the windows updates to see if there was a problem from
that, and it's still slow to browse, almost like have a very slow dial-up
modem running!!!

I also have Netscape 7.1 and that showed a similar slow web browsing
problem. I'm wondering if there is a corrupt file somewhere, but have no way
of really identifying what it may be.

I'm not sure if this is a Windows XP (home) or Internet Explorer problem;
does anyone have some suggestions about what to try to resolve this? Is it
possible to repair or reinstall IE6, the version I have came with the
computer pre-installed.

Thanks

Lester

Rule out parasites that may be calling home while you wait.

Try this: Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing
Uncheck the Enable 3rd party browser extensions

If this clears your problem then find out who the culprit(s) is/are with
these tools.

Let AD-Aware Scan your system for advertising Spyware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com

and:

SpyBot-S&D
http://security.kolla.de/

p.s Reset the 3rd party browser setting.

More: This may be caused by a third-party program (adware, spyware,
parasite).
Get AdAware and SpyBot and run them both. Keep them up to date.

Sometimes a slow browser is caused by Spyware/Adware, which your Anti-Virus
program will not pick up and your firewall did not block.

Spybot - http://www.safer-networking.org
Ad-aware - www.lavasoftusa.com
It is recommended every computer have both programs (or alternatives) on top
of your Anti-Virus Program
Make sure they are always updated and run them regularly, especially after
you have downloaded a program or your computer/browser begins acting
different/strange.

Windows Updates - Update Windows regularly (at the very least once a
month) - ALWAYS download Critical Updates. You can set your computer for
automatic updates if you prefer.

Sypware Tools:
Hijack This - http://209.133.47.200/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe
CWShredder - http://209.133.47.200/~merijn/files/CWShredder.exe

CW Shredder - http://aumha.org/downloads/cwshredder.zip

Hello

I have tried the suggestion you made with no effect. I have downloaded and
run both the AdAware, Spybot and CWshredder. These utilities did not resolve
the problem; Spybot found some cookie entries and some Registry ones (39 in
total), but no active programs.

I noticed that by turning images off in IE6 it did make things go a little
quicker but not by much. Loading HTML files with lots of images offline
works fine, it's only when I'm connected that the problem occurs. If the
problem happens with Netscape too does that indicate a Windows XP issue;
this is only a web browser problem?

I am at a loss as to how to proceed now, given that all the obvious things
have been checked.

I can't be a problem with the broadband connection if e-mail and FTP by a
separate program, and dowloads from the web all go at normal speeds.

Any ideas gratefully received.

Is it NAV/NPF 2002? If so then read

See the post by "sonofjay" entitled "EUREKA IT WORKS!" about 3/4 of the
way down page 7 of the thread for a fix.

It might be worth bookmarking the thread as Symantec are working on a
fix to LiveUpdate - see the post by "ranschultz" (a symantec employee)
at the top of page 16 of the thread.
