Slipstreaming bug for XP Home?

G

Guest

I have two PCs - one runs XP Home, and one XP Pro. I have downloaded the
network install of SP2, and used the /s /o and /n switches to slipstream the
SP into a copy of the I386 folder from the original installation CD. Burnt to
a bootable CD.

Pro worked fine. No probs there - all nicely updated now.

Home didn't. What alerted me was that no Setup.exe was created in the root
of the installation. I know that I didn't install SP2 into the wrong folder,
as I ran the same command I had just run for Pro, changing /s:"c:\cd
images\xp pro" to /s:"c:\cd images\xp home."

Next symptoms: (i) On copying files, it asked for lots of files that SP2 no
longer requires. (ii) Installing, it told me that most device drivers
(starting with "Battery" - this is a desktop machine) aren't XP Logo
certified. (iii) It hung at the "Welcome" screen.

I had an idea that the slipstream process hadn't copied the XP Home specific
files across. I manually extracted all the files in an "ic" folder to the
correct location in my proposed XP SP2 install. It then worked fine.

So... With my XP Home CD (full retail), it looks like slipstreaming doesn't
copy the \ic files across. Pro handles the \ip fine.

Don't know where to post this, so I'll open a support request and send a
"suggestion" too. (I'm now installed fine, so not technically "support" that
I need)

Either one of the following utilities makes slipstreaming SP2
into Windows XP a breeze:

Hello,
Use the spslpsrm.log file to trouble-shoot slipstream issues.
This includes all the file copies as well as switches used,
directories,version number of Update.exe, and error messages\conditions.
That should be useful in trouble-shooting the issues when you make the
support call.
The spslpsrm.log file is on the \windows folder.
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]
