Slide contents disappear when editing presentation

PPT 2003 vesion - I can not see backgrounds, tables or line drawings I put on
slides when in 'edit mode'. (Which makes it almost impossible to edit.)
These things are visible in the thumbnails to the left and when the slide
show is running. Any suggestions?
