shutdown

When I either log off or shutdown I get a window that
says the program is not responding and I have the option
to close. I close and then xp will either log off or
shutdown. Any ideas why xp won't just shut down as it is
supposed to?

You have a program running that Windows cannot shut down in an orderly fashion. For example, it might be waiting for a reply from you. If Windows shuts it down without your permission, you might lose data. That's why Windows offers you the opportunity to stop the shutdown and deal with the program yourself, or go ahead and shut Windows down even though you might lose data.
