shutdown without user request

intermetant shutdown. I have a problem with my gateway 1400 laptop. this is
a new problem and I have owned and used this computer for over two years
prior to this problem. XP reboots my laptop two or more times a day and does
a disk check.
anybody know about this issue?
help!

Hi - Your hard drive may be failing or your laptop may be overheating.
It is always helpful if you can get a Stop Error (fondly known as the
Blue Screen of Death), so first set your computer to *not*
automatically start on failure, thusly:

From the Control Panel, double-click the System applet, then
Advanced>Startup and Recovery>Settings and under System Failure uncheck
"Automatically Restart". Now when you get the BSOD write down the Stop
Error. You can research it on line or post it.

To determine for sure whether your hard drive is failing, you can run a
diagnostic utility from the drive mftr. Since this is a laptop, you
probably should check on Gateway's website or call their tech support.
