Try cleaning up your hard drive. Delete temporary files, cookies, internet
cache files, etc. Then defragment the hard drive. Check your StartUp
folder, for unknown, or unneeded apps.

But ... I tried that and no luck.

Instead of giving folks false hope, why not recommend
canning SP 2? Clearly some machines aren't accepting SP 2
with open arms -- mine being one of 'em.

After spending lots of time --too much, but a learning
experience-- decided best was to FDISK and reinstall OS,
drivers, etc.

And, now, I ignore the SP 2 update reminder. PC has never
been running better.

I also downloaded XP service pack 2, and now my computer freezes everytime I
shut down, I have to push and hold the power button to shut it off. Does
anyone know what to do??? Thanks!!!!
