shutdown and update problems

XP HOME SP2

I installed SP2 a month ago. Recently I got shutdown and windows update
problems.
click START / TURN OFF COMPUTER, then it takes about 5 min before the "Turn
off computer" window (with standby , turn off and restart options) appears.
Click turn off, it take another 5 min before the computer is finally shutdown.

Meanwhile, I can't update windows. It stops at "Checking for the lastest
version ..." and never goes further.

Can anyone give me some suggestions. Thanks,

Sunny
