Shut Down issue

F

Fred Hoffman

I run Windows XP Home on a Dell dimension 4400. After I
click on Windows "turn off" or "Restart", a dialog box
opens indicating the "CCAPP" is shutting down with an
interval window showing progress. Then, as the shut down
process proceeds, I get an error message indicating
DWWin.EXE has not initialized, followed by an error sound,
after which Windows shuts down. I am aware of no other
abnormality, other than possible slowing of the shut down
and bootup processes. All I have been able to find out
about DWWin is that it is related to error reporting.
How can I clear this up?

Hi Fred,

The first is due to:

Process File: ccapp or ccapp.exe
Process Name: Common Client CC App
Description: Associated with Norton AntiVirus 2003, which runs auto-protect
and email checking facilities. Without this service, both facilities cannot
function correctly.
Company: Symantec Corporation
System Process: No
Security Risk ( Virus/Trojan/Worm/Adware/Spyware ): No
Common Errors: N/A

The second is due to the same in part of it not being able to shut down
properly. This is part of Dr. Watson. Try this edit to see if it helps and
good luck:

Hi Kelly,
Thanks for your quick response. I tried it this morning,
but the problem recurs. A more accurate rendition of the
error message concerning DWWin.exe, which appears only
momentarily, is "DLL intialization failed". I do run
Norton Antivirus 2003 as you guessed. The problem occurs
when there are no applications running up front, although,
WinFax Pro v. 10, has a tendency to run in background even
though I have eliminated it from my startup menu several
times. Could this be the problem? Are there any
processes I should experiment with closing before i
initiate shut-down?

Without knowing more about your system and without having running either of
the programs you mention....

1. Check what is listed under your run keys: Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Also running services if you have it.

2. Run the XP Startup Tracker from here:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_u.htm#xp_util

3. Check the WinFax Service setting: Automatic/Manual, etc.
Start/Run: services.msc

More information on XP Services:
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

4. From a previous post: dwwin.exe is Dr Watson which is used by the error
reporting tool. Alot of security related applications will throw up warning
flags about this file trying to read, write or modify a number of other .exe
files. This isn't anything to worry about because it's only trying to
investigate "events" that it believes is causing problems that may lead to
crashing.

You can either disable Error Reporting or finish troubleshooting the issue.
Good luck!
