Shutdown Problem

I have Windows XP on a Dell Vostro PC. More often than not when shutting down
I get a pop-up "End Program ccApp" - this program is not responding. I must
click End Program for the computer to complete the shut down process. I'd
like to fix it so it doesn't occur. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

when windows begins the
process of shutting down
a few basic things occur
like:

turn off / power down devices,

end/close programs and get
them out of memory and

make final entries into
the registry files.

when it comes to ending
programs, the problem
is most often than not
resulting from non microsoft
software, i.e., third party
programs.

one method to test shut
down performance is to
find out which running
programs are stalling the
operating system.

you can click on start>
run>msconfig

then go to startups tab
and disable everything
temporarily for your analysis.

then go to services and
"hide" microsoft services.

(you might want to jot down
what you have modified above)

then what is left can be disabled,
then reboot, wait a few minutes
for the system to settle in/idle and
then initiate a shut down.

if the shut down goes smoothly,
then you have likely eliminated
the problem via the above steps.

this process of elimination will
be helpful for you as you re-enable
each of the item, in order to
narrow down which one is problematic.

-------------

incidentally, you may want
to focus on anti virals, like
symantec if you use it.

Try the following:

Go to Start > Run and enter REGEDIT and press OK. This fires up the
registry editor.

Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop. Edit the
following keys:

1) AutoEndTasks: Default is 0, make it 1

You can also try the following settings under the same branch:

2) ForegroundLockTimeout: Default is 20000, make it 0

3) HungAppTimeout:Default is 5000, try 1000, if it's still slow, try
500. I don't suggest going anything lower than 250 though as it could
really make programs / services that need a momentd or two to end
act...funny.

4) WaitToKillAppTimeout: Default is 20000, try 1000, if it's still
slow, try 500. I don't suggest going anything lower than 250 though as
it could really make programs / services that need a moment or two to
end act...funny.

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control

1) WaitToKillServiceTimeout: Default is 20000, try 2000. I don't use
this setting personally and it's questionable whether XP supports it
or not.

When you finish, reboot. Log into XP and then do a shutdown and see
how long it take.

If some of the keys above don't exists, just create them using the
right mouse button.

#2 is DWORD value

I used to have this problem on my Girlfriends computer. She had Norton 360.
The program was so messed up that 99% of the time it didn't work.. I
couldn't open it up to view settings or try to update it.

I installed the thing and never looked back!! I went with free alternatives.
